TV Babble - Just giving my weird view on my soaps!

Okay I admit it I've thrown socks at the screen and I've even yelled. Yes there's some mocking and renaming too and maybe sometimes I might be accidentally amusing.

Back After the Break: Eddie McGuire Resigns as Nine CEO

In a rather unsurprising move,
Eddie McGuire
Eddie McGuire
Eddie McGuire has announced that he is leaving his position as CEO of the Nine Network. The ubiquitous personality plans to increase his on-air presence, with the network claiming that his absence has hurt Nine's ratings.

'Everywhere Eddie' hadn't really let his position as chief executive officer stop his TV appearances, acting as host of 1 vs. 100. In addition to this he took part in host the Beaconsfield and FIFA specials of The Footy Show. Try as he might, it seemed that Eddie was unable to step away from in front of the camera.

I found Eddie's initial appointment to the top job an odd move, and I always saw it as only a matter of time before he gave it away. The man obviously loves hosting, and he certainly wasn't doing the network any favours as CEO. CNNNN's reference to the Eddie McGuire Virus is quite apt - it's not going to be easy to eradicate Eddie from our screens.

...I heard that the Big Mac 'boned' himself this morning...

Wonder if he phoned a friend or asked the audience...??

Still...it's 50/50......

the network claiming that his absence has hurt Nine's ratings.
...and Elvis will never leave the building.
Sheesh.
As you pointed out...who are they kidding?

Hope you are well Ninabelle.
It's great to 'see' you.
Busy busy busy?

I still haven't had much time to post nor comment but had to come over when I saw your new post notification email.

Dusk, I doubt Eddie asked the audience - surely no one would have said that they wanted him back...

Unfortunately, things are very busy for me at the moment. I really would love some more time to devote to Orble. I hope you haven't been working too hard

Lovely to 'see' you, Dusk, as always.

i thought a captain was supposed to stay with his sinking ship? but it must be sinking so fast that not even eddie could keep it on the surface. kerrie must be flipping in his grave!

when they appointed eddie as the ceo, i thought it would be a good move considering what he did for the collingwood football team (whether you like them or not, they are a brilliant business). but it seems now that even he can't save them and has jumped ship too, not before collecting his 4 million for his one years work. i wonder who will 'have a crack' at it now?

Jonathan, Eddie can't stay on the sinking ship. He's got to get the exclusive rights to the ship's sinking and then host the TV special.
At this stage they are talking about restructuring Nine's management completely, so it's not clear if and when they will be restaffing the position.

I had a little laugh when the Channel 9 stocks went up in reaction to him 'quitting'.

Competitionqueen, thanks for sharing that! Hearing it certainly made me giggle.

let's hope that his footy team gets boned too and every show related to eddie. let's go one further and wish that his former sidekick in the dropkick sam newman gets boned as well. we want a bone-a-thon for all things 9 related.

now that i have built up some momentum let's bone the producers of 60 minutes who have turned a show that used to display quality journalism into an hour long episode of a current affair.

Word, Stanley. Channel Nine has become somewhat of an embarrassment, particularly with the dumbing down of once quality programmes.
As for Sam Newman, I've never been able to understand how he managed to get on TV in the first place. Perhaps if I knew something about football I might be able to grasp it, but at the moment I find it simply baffling that someone so mean and unlikeable could be given such a role.

Nina,

Not surprising at all that he's going.

I totally agree with Stanley, Channel 9 is a mess. And they should be ashamed of the way they dumb everything down......I can only just barely remember the days when 60 minutes was about quality journalism.

As for Sam Newman.....the man is an idiot, but I find him entertaining. I can't explain it.......

Hope things settle down a little for you!

Kylie, I suppose Sam Newman exhibits the 'train wreck' effect - it's hard to look away.
Generally, the only reason I now tune in to 60 Minutes is for Peter Harvey's mailbag. I can't help but find him entertaining!

Harsh comments, but mostly a ring a truth about them...

They won't be replacing Eddie. It's a kind of proof of what many have suspected for a long time - Nine is run by the PBL board, not the CEO. It's the reason they have been chaning CEOs in the last coupl eof years like they change socks.

Nine feel they need to appeal to the lowest common denominator to keep their ratings up. In a way, they are right. Look at the shows that blast the ratings - "Dancing with The Stars"... ugh... even writing that makes me shiver.... and if I see another "When Good ___ Go Bad", or Seaon 36 of "Cop Video Chase Files Unlocked Countdown" hosted by Grant Denyer and Kate Fischer on Seven...

IMO, Channel Nine is the ABC by comparison to Channel Seven at the moment!

In the end it all comes down to ratings and advertising dollars. It's a business.

yoda, Channel 7 may have some appalling shows, but at least they have a few good ones to balance things out. Does Nine air anything that's worth watching? I honestly don't know; I don't think I've turned it one for a couple of years!

Whoa, there, Nina. I think here we're going to have to agree to disagree. I haven't switched on Channel 7 in ages.

I know you're into your Heroes and Lost, but they really don't do it for me. The last thing I watched on 7 was 24, and even then I missed the last season because they ran it so ridiculously late.

If Heroes and Lost are 7s saving grace, then we can lump CSI and Without a Trace into the same category.

Truth is, both networks need to do a lot of making up for the onslaught of abominations like "Where Are They Now", "The Rich List", "1 vs 100" and the post-Origin shocker "Going To Work Naked".

As far as local productions, they are both to be found sadly wanting, in my opinion...

We will have to agree to disagree Everyone has different tastes and likes, so obviously different shows and channels are going to appeal to different people. Personally, I wouldn't put CSI and WIthout a Trace in the same category as Heroes - the utterly formulaic nature of the first two make me cringe. That's just me though, and obviously there are legions of fans out there who would disagree...

You're right in that both networks need to get their act together. I think we can probably both agree that the best free to air channel to be watching is the real ABC
