Veronica Mars: Versatile Toppings
January 23rd 2007 03:24
Versatile Toppings was an enjoyable episode of Veronica Mars that once again felt reminiscent of the first season. There were a few small problems, but not so much as to diminish the episode.
This week's mystery was well executed - there were some good red herrings, and having Kylie (Kristin Cavalleri) as the blackmailer was quite unexpected. The biggest problem was Kristin Cavalleri herself, whose poor line readings detracted from what could have been an interesting character. With Kylie's cruel outing of her closeted girlfriend, Marlena (Miriam S. Korn), you have to wonder if anyone in Neptune is a decent human being. Someone who did do a good job was Mario Ardila Jr. as Arturo, and it will be interesting to see whether his talk of PCH being back in charge will come to a head.
The other issue I had with the A-Plot was Veronica herself. Kristin Bell did a great job as always, but Veronica seemed off this episode. Her witty one liners were few and far between, and she let others get the better of her several times. You know something is amiss when Dick (Ryan Hansen) manages to one up Veronica with a clever retort. Perhaps this behaviour was just a one-off thing; however, it may be indicative of a bigger issue with the character.
While I can't help but love Logan (Jason Dohring), he certainly is living up to his Obligatory Psychotic Jackass title. The way he is using Hannah (Jessy Schram) is really quite cruel; despite what he told her, I believe he knew all along that she was the daughter of Dr Griffith (Rick Peters). I can't help but wonder if it was Logan that planted the cocaine - he was in the bathroom, after all, and he specifically told Hannah to look around the house for evidence of her father's ill deeds. It also seems awfully convenient that the Fitzpatricks and the River Stix were listed in the phone - you would think that the good doctor would be smart enough to cover his tracks and list them under another name. I think there is going to be one hell of a confrontation between Logan and Veronica when she confronts him about his actions. Is it too much for me to hope that a heated exchange between them will cause sparks of another type to fly?
I think that Keith (Enrico Colantoni) is correct in his assertion that Terrence Cook (Jeffrey Sams) was not behind the bus crash. While the explosives may seem incriminating, Veronica overlooked the fact that the cars were stored in a hanger owned by Woody Goodman (Steve Guttenberg). Considering what we've learned about his character in Rashard and Wallace Go To White Castle and Nobody Puts Baby In A Corner, he is becoming more and more shady as time goes on.
It was also good to see Sheriff Lamb (Michael Muhney) call Keith's bluff. He may be short sighted when it comes to catching criminals, but I bet he plays a mean game of poker.
One other thing I really love about this show is the recurring cast of minor characters. It's great that they actually reappear, rather than just have random extras from week to week. Stoner Corny (Jonathan Chesner) is a favourite of mine, and he had some great lines this week as the Master Bait. It was also great to see Mac (Tina Majorino) again - why can't she be a main character?
I also thought I'd mention Peter Ferrer - Ryan (Bradford Anderson) listed him as another victim of the crash. I don't know why he's important, but the fact that he was mentioned explicitly has got to be a clue. As far as I'm concerned, there are no throwaway lines on this show.
Veronica Mars returns next Friday at 10.35pm on Network Ten.
