Veronica Mars: Plan B

February 13th 2007 08:56
Plan B was an excellent episode of Veronica Mars. Although it contained a lot of amusing moments, it was probably the most disquieting episode of the season to date.

The culmination of the stabbing plotline was quite unsettling, and I am certain that the ramifications of this episode will be evident in those that follow.
Veronica Mars - Plan B
Weevil confesses his sins*
Molly (Annie Campbell) obviously was lying about the Fitzpatricks killing both her and Felix (Brad Bufanda) if they knew about their relationship. What I didn't foresee was that Thumper (James Molina) was the one to tell them, probably as a way to ingratiate himself with the clan.
Throughout the episode, Francis Capra did a standout job as Weevil. This was particularly evident when he confronted Molly, and Capra’s powerful statement of his love for Felix sold a line which could have easily come across as very cheesy. Weevil has always been a quite a dark character, but tricking the Fitzpatricks into punishing Thumper was particularly malicious. His actions may come back to haunt him, as some children were watching him outside the church - a fact that is made even more significant by the laughing children at the closing credits.

The manner in which Thumper was killed was quite chilling. At first I was unsure as to why the Fitzpatricks were tying him up in a bathroom. However, when I heard the air horn, I was struck with the dreadful realisation that he was in the stadium. This, coupled with Weevil's visit to the confessional, gave the episode a very sinister edge. I wonder if Weevil was in fact confessing to Father Fitzpatrick?

There were some really enjoyable scenes between Veronica (Kristin Bell) and Logan (Jason Dohring) in this episode. During the stake-out the sense of camaraderie and friendship between the pair had returned, and it made me hopeful as this connection between them was what led to LoVe in the first place. The stolen glances between them while they were dancing were also very sweet.

Speaking of the Sadie Hawkins Dance, it certainly contained some interesting interaction between the characters. Gia (Krysten Ritter) was her usual crazy self, and Logan's annoyance at her was hilarious. It was very nice of Jackie (Tessa Thompson) to take Charlie (Caleb Steinmeyer) to the dance, and I like that she is trying to become a better person. I was a little disappointed in Wallace (Percy Daggs III), as he is supposed to be the good guy to balance out Veronica's lapses of morality. His treatment of Jane (Valorie Curry) was quite awful, and I'm not sure why he was stringing her along in the first place if he still wanted Jackie. After all, it was obvious after his return that she wanted him back. I guess that Wallace should just learn to stay away from dances - after all, he left town after the last one.

I was also upset about the tiff between Beaver/Cassidy (Kyle Gallner) and Mac (Tina Majorino), as they had previously been a very cute couple. His behaviour is very strange and defensive, and it seems obvious that he is hiding something. I thought it was interesting that Beaver made reference to the dance being decorated as a garden paradise. This alludes to the Garden of Eden, where Eve partook of the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Does Mac really want to know the reason behind Beaver's reluctance to take their relationship to another level?

Gia may be a nutcase, but it would appear that this is hereditary. Woody Goodman's (Steve Guttenberg) behaviour was extremely bizarre, particularly when the age of the recording was revealed. Surely there must be something very incriminating contained within it to justify his reaction. The way he grabbed Logan's arm was very creepy, and he was giving off a strong Mark Foley vibe.
Despite Woody's creepiness, Logan had some great scenes as Honorary Deputy County Commissioner, such as his smart comment to Keith (Enrico Colantoni). I particularly enjoyed finding out that he had stolen Sheriff Lamb's (Michael Muhney) parking space. It was also fitting that Logan was the one to demolish the stadium - after all, he has a very destructive nature, and would have relished the chance to obliterate without consequence. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be, although it is quite poetic that Logan unknowingly gained revenge on the person that made his life hell.
