Veronica Mars – Blast from the Past
November 13th 2006 02:30
Blast from the Past is a great episode, one of the best of the season thus far. The mystery of the week plot was a little confusing in places, but on the whole very entertaining. What I really love about this show is the continuity – there were many interesting developments made that are sure to surface in later episodes.
I just wanted to say at the outset that Percy Daggs III did a fantastic job during this episode. I can’t believe how far he has come over the course of the series. Wallace as a character now has so much depth, and it’s heart-aching to see the pain caused to him by the people he loves. Now that he has left with his father, I hope it’s not too long before we see him again.
I think Veronica was put in a bit of difficult position by Wallace in this episode. He wanted her to be there for him, but in doing so she would upset Jackie, and thus Wallace. However, Wallace was also quite correct in saying that she makes things about her. She does this, but think it is a defence mechanism – if you look out for yourself, then it stops you from getting hurt again. Kristen Bell did a wonderful job conveying Veronica’s conflicting emotions, as always.
There is no way I could hate the character of Jackie more right now, unless she were to butcher the main cast. She’s hurting Veronica and Wallace, and that is just not on. While I think Tessa Thompson’s acting has improved, she still isn’t up to the calibre of the principle players.
While I have said similar things about Teddy Dunn in the past, I thought he did quite a good job this week. I absolutely loved the scene where he approached Logan and offered the proverbial olive branch. It must have been difficult for him to ask, and for Logan to accept, but they were friends for a very long time – that’s not something you are just willing to give up on. Jason Dohring also did a fantastic job in that scene, subtly allowing happiness at Duncan’s proposal to seep through. I also thought that Duncan and Veronica seemed to be much more believable as a couple this week, but I’m still hoping for some more LoVe.
I’m really looking forward to the next episode, and am hoping the show will explore the fallout from Wallace’s departure, as well as Keith’s storylines. The next episode will air at 10.40pm this Friday. That’s two weeks in a row! I never thought I’d get excited at the prospect of a show airing in successive weeks – still, that’s Network Ten for you.
