Premiere of Tripping Over
October 26th 2006 03:43
Tripping Over made its debut last night on Network Ten. Despite some problems, the show was quite enjoyable – certainly not groundbreaking, but more promising than many Australian dramas as of late.
Daniel MacPherson as Ned made for good comic relief, playing a sort of parody of himself. It was great to see the attention-hungry Ned watching himself dubbed in Thai and not-so-subtly mentioning to Dave that his show aired in the UK.
Nic, played by Abe Forsythe, displays a nice and genuine friendship with Ned. The character himself is fairly likeable, but does come across as something of a tool.
I found the character that I identified most with was Lizzie, played by Kathryn Drysdale. Perhaps this empathy was due to the fact that I too am one of those boring people that travel with an itinerary.
I found that Callum, played by Leon Ockenden, and Tamsin, played by Alexandra Moen, were a trifle bland. Despite revealing that he was gay, Callum’s character seems quite unexplored at the moment. However, I’m sure the death of Dave with result in a lot of issues and angst for him that will be explored in later episodes.
Tamsin seems driven and self righteous, but personality wise is neither here nor there. I’m hoping that her character is developed further, because at the moment it appears that she is being set up to be the main character. My dislike of her so far may be attributed to this. I generally have an aversion to the central characters of shows, such as Jack from Lost, because I don’t respond well to being told who I should like or empathise with.
The character of Dave was quite enigmatic. While I myself have not travelled much on a large scale, I have had friends tell me that it was not unusual to encounter the same travellers in every destination, so I thought it was interesting that this was mentioned. His death will have a marked impact on the core cast, and I will hazard a guess that he will be present in some form in the future episodes.
As for the plot, I thought the life-changing event was quit well done. It would have been easy for the writers to fall into the trap of attempting to be ‘switched-on’ and current by having a terrorist attack. A simple accident is in some ways worse – it is senseless and random.
The humour in the show was fairly good, as it had a subtly that I respond well too. The plot did lapse into predictability at various points, particularly with Nic’s girlfriend. One of the core rules of television plots – never, ever surprise someone, as it always ends in disaster.
For those of you that missed it, downloads are available for a fee on Bigpond. I think this show does have potential, and I’ll be making an effort to watch again next week. Let’s just hope they don’t stuff it up.

I'd heard on the radio and from my sister that it was pretty good, but you know, my sister loves McLeods Daughters, so she's not the best point of reference. lol.
Perhaps I'll check it out next week.
