A New Use for the Remote – TV Babble’s Rating System

November 25th 2006 11:12
I’ve decided that it’s about time I introduced a ratings system for the TV shows and episodes that I review. After some thinking, I have come up with the completely unoriginal idea of using television remote controls, simply because I already had the image available from the site’s banner.

Episodes will be rated between half a remote and five remotes – I could have started with zero remotes, but a picture of nothing isn’t as interesting. It will be based on a super-secret algorithm comprised of variables such as plotlines, character development and interaction, acting and production values (okay, so it’s just a vague outline of percentages and me listening to my gut, but you get the idea). It will be applied retroactively to all the items I have previously reviewed.

The ratings system is as follows:

Abysmal
The episode is absolutely unwatchable. How it even made it to air is a mystery, up there with what actually happened to Azaria Chamberlain, or why socks disappear in the wash.

***
Terrible
The episode is plagued with problems throughout. Its only value is as an aid in teaching others what not to do.

***
Bad
The episode is just plain bad. It may be worth watching just to make fun of.

***
Below Average
The episode does not quite hit the dizzying heights of average. Consider tuning in as an alternative to doing actual work.

***
Average
The episode is enjoyable if you don’t examine it too closely. Just don’t tune in with high expectations.

***
Above Average
The episode is fairly entertaining. It’s executed well enough that you wouldn’t have to be embarrassed about admitting you watched it.

***
Good
The episode is solid in all elements. It lacks that extra oomph to take it a step further, but it still stands on its own.

***
Great
The episode has an extra sparkle that moves it from good to great territory. Bound to be remembered fondly for some wonderful moments.

***
Fantastic
This episode is up there amongst the cream of the crop. Sure to find a place in top ten lists, as well as be ravaged for references and quotes.

***
Perfect
Almost impossible to obtain, this rating means the episode simply could not be improved upon. It deserves a place amongst the classics, such as the works of Shakespeare and Homer (the Greek, not the Simpson)

***

The rating will be placed at the end of any episode recaps and discussion, as shown in this post. As always, I’d appreciate any feedback anyone may have on the system.

Fantastic! I was also wondering if you can squeeze in an age recommendation?

> Shakespeare and Homer (the Greek, not the Simpson)

LOL!

I used to have a rating system (out of 10) for my movie reviews, but I found that it confused me more than helped me in the long term. Good luck with your remotes! )

Thanks Daressi. I think extra images are always good in a post, and I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Hope, I'll have a think about how I could implement that later this week. Thanks for the suggestion!

postmoderncritic: I'll have to see whether I can stick this system out or whether it confuses me too much.... which is a definite possibility!
