Opinion - The New Knight Rider
September 25th 2008 19:37
Okay, now I'm a child of the late 70s and early 80s tv, which means that I use to watch Knight Rider as religiously as I did the A-Team, but damn if this new Knight Rider ain't crappy. I mean, the whole thing has the feel of an up jumped version of a syndicated show, like Viper, the Ford Commericial/Team Knight Rider, and other junk.
Obviously I'm not slow pitching softball here, especially since I'm sort of fed up with my childhood memories being screwed with. I'd say raped, like most folk do, but I don't like that analogy much, for a lot of different reasons.
Anyhow, stay on Target, Robert.
First off, the video style has that low-budget feel to it and the special effects seem like the were pulled from a half-dozen or so video games, but not from the latest consoles. I'm sure someone thought they were good, but they ain't primetime television good. The only exception is the transformation effects for K.I.T.T.. It's not like the old Knight Rider had the best special effects in the world, but at least they fit the show, these take you out of the moment.
Now, the writing....
Seriously, if you're gonna try and write a smart, hi-tech show about a secret group that works with bleeding edge technology, then you have to write them as such and not go for some lame dilema where you lack even basic technology. The viewer has already suspended disbelief enough to by a car with an artificial intelligence and the ability to transform, don't insult that with the sudden dilema being the lack of a fire extinguishing system, that's just stupid.
Now, I'm not execpting Heroes here or Fringe, but if I like Chuck (which I do) and I buy Chuck (which I do) then at least give me something on par with Chuck, damn you're on the same network, have some writers chit-chat. You've enough pretty folk, in all spots, to be Chuck, so yo may as well bring the writing up to par.
Obviously I'm a smidge down on the show, go figure, it's like the writers have this potentially good idea, but they're not living up to that idea and someone needs to realize that you only fill a show with a metric ass-ton of cut scenes of the car transforming, internal engine effects, and being worked on when you do not have enough of a script with dialog to fill your timeslot.
Fix it, now. My normal five episode window for a new show has been cut to three, asshats, so get on with it and impress me.
