I have returned! And I brought pictures...

January 11th 2008 04:06
After quite a hiatus, I have finally returned to the warm embrace of the Orble network. While my holiday ended some time ago, various circumstances involving Christmas, New Year, class and work have prevented me from posting until now. I had an absolutely wonderful time in Hong Kong and Beijing; as you can imagine, my time was spent shopping, sightseeing, and then shopping some more.

I didn't have much opportunity to check out the television while abroad. I did, however, discover that Hong Kong soap operas are every bit as terrible and hilarious as our own – and I was able to deduce that despite the fact that they were all in Cantonese with no English subtitles. Also entirely in Cantonese was the Beijing tour, which was challenging, to say the least! Thankfully my friend was able to translate the important parts for me. My whole trip was just amazing, and I can't recommend travelling there enough.

I've decided to include a few select pictures from my time away. I'm quite a novice when it comes to photography, so I'd appreciate any feedback given from the resident Orble experts.

Nina,

Welcome back!!! Those photo's are amazing. I love Asian architecture. It's so ornate and they're not afraid of colour.

I've been to Hong Kong a few times, but I would really love to see China as well.

I hope you're well rested and ready to blog!

Thanks Kylie! It's always nice to come back to Orble and 'see' the same people around. I'd love to see more of China - hopefully at some stage I'll get to go back.

Hi Nina!

You are too modest - these photos are GREAT! Good colours and great angles.

Glad you've enjoyed your time - and looking forward to your tv snippets!

Welcome back Ninabelle!!

I'm definitely not an expert but these images are beautiful! Wow. You have definitely got that 'natural eye'.

The "vivid colours of the Summer palace" image is just breathtaking. As is the frozen lake and the flags..they all are!
I love the one of you...I know you're going to get incredibly embarrassed at this (again...because I've said it before!)...but...you're gorgeous!!

I too have only just come back from being away so have a lot of Orbling to catch up with. Intended to do that next week but just had to comment here when I saw the title of your New Post...I've been hanging out to see your pics!

Despite the busy-ness, hope you're keeping well and happy pretty TV Babble-ina...
Wonderful post...thank you...and thank you for that awesome compliment...

big hugs...

Dusk

Thank you Harry, JohnDoe and Epiphanie! I'm really happy with the way the photos came out. Although I'm thankful that my camera has a stabiliser function - my hands aren't that steady at the best of times, and the freezing temperatures certainly didn't help...
Obviously I didn't take the one of myself, but I really love the angle of that one, so I just had to include it.

Hi Nina,

Welcome back and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you!

Wow, those pics of Hong Kong take me back, as does China...tell me, has the pollution gotten as bad in beijing as they would have us believe?

Lovely to see you again...

Lilla, I was actually surprised by the lack of pollution in Beijing. For the most part the days were quite crisp with lovely clear blue skies. There certainly was pollution around though - the haze was most obvious in the early morning and late evening, and we all found that our skin suffered as a result. I imagine that it would probably be more noticeable in the summer months.

Happy New Year to you too

Hi Nina

i can`t believe I missed your post - apologies as I have been rather slack in the Orble halls as of late.

Oh my word you have made my feet itch and the ants in my pants go into a frenzy! I LOVE your photos. That first one just oozes the serenity and calmness of the moment and the ones (you have two) just a bit further down with the rays of the sun flitering down are just gorgeous.

I am as much a novice as you when it comes to taking photos and i don`t want to sound like anything different other than offering some friendly tips from my own trial and error because I understand how important photography is to me and I appreciate any feedback also.

You have a great way of framing your subjects, managing to capture just enough in the shot to tell a story - which encompasses what photography is about. I love the way that you have titled your camera down to capture the bricked area infront of the Forbidden City... capturing the true essence of Dusk (of all its beautiful kinds ) This is a secret that can make or break a photo - just angling the camera down or up a little to include scenery that should be part of the photo in order to finish the story(be aware of reflections too!). ( A little trick - try to get as low to the ground as you can and tilt your camera at different angles - ie straight ahead, upwards - even if you rest your camera on the floor vertically and take a shot from there - try this on the surface of a body of water at sunset...WOW!)

I absolutely love how you captured the branch in the photo entitled Walking up to the Great Wall I guarantee you that if that branch wasn`t in the picture it wouldn`t be as good as it is.

You really do have an excellent eye Nina and I love how you have taken your photos from different perspectives as opposed to the normal touristy 'point and click' point of view,

I don`t know what type of camera it is that you use, but if you have the ability may I suggest you investing in a polarising filter? all it will do is enhance your colours and take away the glare that is sometimes left by the sun.

If you are on digital try playing around with your shots and converting them to black and white. A free download program like Picasa will allow to have LOADS of fun.

It looks like you had an amazing trip. Thanks for sharing your memories with us. Happy New YEar and all the very best for 2008

Ash

WELCOME BACK NINA!

I barely know how to point and click so I'm very jealous of your amazing 'amateur' photos!

"Move over blogging" - hehehe.

Good job, looking forward to the 2008 Babble.

Thanks for your lovely comment, Ash. I was using a very simple point-and-shoot Olympus camera, so I was delighted that they still came out okay. I'll have to have a play around with some of the images in an photo editor when I have the time

Thanks to you too Michaelie - I'm looking forward to the 2008 wit!

Awwww...
I've just been back from Southern China myself, Nina. I had the same idea to post some photos, but I should warn that they are taken with a mobile phone camera as I also had a video camera on me at the same time.

We can't seem too touristy around these parts can we! And that feeling you get when you realise you haven't seen more than ten westerners as opposed to ten billion chinese in the time you're there.

I hope you didn't mind the sewage smell too much... or the raw fish skin or whatever food they gave you during the trip to give you an extra edge on the whole culture shock/experience.

RockRockon,
Opto

Hi Nina,

It seems I have acquired a stalker ... Just ignore or delete, sorry.

My response to this loon is on my latest 'lightbulb' post, if you are curious.

Cheers

Opto, it really was quite an experience at times. I stayed with a friend in Hong Kong, and it was in an area where there were no other Caucasian people around - which meant I got some strange looks at times!
I'd love to see some of the pictures that you took

Lilla, no need to apologise - its hardly your fault. I certainly am curious though, and will head over to your post!
