Heroes: Run!
July 11th 2007 01:33
Run! was a slightly weaker episode of Heroes. However, the distance travelled in this episode brings the story closer to its ultimate destination.
The episode picks up where it left off, with Meredith (Jessalyn Gilsig) on the phone to Nathan (Adrian Pasdar). She informs him that both she and their daughter are still alive. Meredith asks for $100 000, or she will let the world know that Nathan had a child out of wedlock. I'm quite certain that when Claire (Hayden Panettiere) imagined her birth mother's attributes, blackmailing was not one of them. She is fast overtaking Mr Bennet (Jack Coleman) as the most duplicitous parent.
Claire's other mother, Mrs Bennet (Ashley Crow), has been undergoing neurological tests to determine the cause of her headaches. Methinks it may have something to do with the fact that the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis) has taken to her brain with the mental equivalent of a pot scourer. Mr Bennet says that there is nothing to worry about, and this lie one again pulls him into the lead over Meredith.
Jessica (Ali Larter) has taken over Niki's life, covering up the symbol on her back with makeup. Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey) wants to know if the three of them are ever going to discuss their powers. He wants to fight crime, seeming to forget that his entire family are criminals.
Jessica is continuing her criminal ways, receiving a package from Mr Linderman. Aron Malsky (Kevin Chamberlin) has stolen money from the mob boss, and is now wanted dead.
Booted from the police force, Matt is now working as private security. Of course, he has been assigned to protect Aron Malsky. I did want Matt to do something more interesting, but damn he has some bad luck.
Matt escorts Aron into a building, while Jessica watches from outside. Aron exchanges the stolen money for diamonds, and Matt hears the dealer thinking that Linderman's guy will soon take Aron down. Matt immediately rushes Aron out, and, realising the danger that he is in, he gives Matt a diamond in exchange for getting him out alive. Meanwhile, Jessica is on her way to complete her task. She smiles serenely as she listens to the elevator music, which is a hilarious contrast to Matt's absolute panic.
Aron and Matt run down the stairs, trying to escape. As Jessica follows them, she sees Niki in her reflection. Niki begs her to stop, and outside the stairwell, Matt is able to hear both Niki and Jessica's thoughts. Jessica reveals that she is doing this to repay Linderman for getting her out of jail. Thinking there are two shooters, Matt calls for police backup.
A confrontation ensues, which results in Jessica throwing Matt out of the window. Greg Grunberg's characters always get such terrible treatment. Thankfully he lands on a sign, so he will live to see another unlucky day.
Hiro (Masi Oka) and Ando (James Kyson Lee) are continuing on their journey, and have returned to the casinos of Las Vegas. Ando does not want to bother with the sword, but Hiro is determined not to give up. He says that a hero must have hope. Hope (Missi Pyle) is literally around the corner, crying her eyes out.
Hope spins a tale about her abusive boyfriend (Bill Fagerbakke), saying that although she has left him, but she accidentally forget her bag. Ando, besotted, says that he and Hiro will go and retrieve it. Hiro is less than keen, but as the pair argue, Hope overhears them say the name Linderman. She tells them that she can introduce them if they help her.
Ando gains entry into Hope's boyfriend's room by disguising himself as an employee. Hiro is hidden under the trolley, but flees when he finds a cabinet full of guns. Ando chooses to remain, and finds the bag under the bed.
Hiro returns to Hope's dressing room, and discovers that she is a con artist. Hiro needs to work on being covert, as he manages to lose his balance and fall through a rack of clothing. He tries to stand up to her, but she easily knocks him out.
Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) is attempting to contact the people on the list, but few will return his calls. He is desperate to warn them that they are in danger, but his rather frantic approach likely suggests to them that this danger emanates from him. There is one person, however, who has left a message – Zane Taylor (Ethan Cohn), a young man who sounds absolutely terrified by his newfound ability.
Zane waits anxiously for Mohinder to arrive. Unfortunately for Zane, Sylar (Zachary Quinto) turns up first, introducing himself as Dr Suresh.
Despite his eagerness to contact evolved humans, Mohinder was evidently in no hurry to actually meet them face to face, giving Sylar plenty of time to steal Zane's ability. The brain in Zane is another one he gains. When Mohinder finally arrives at Zane's house, and is greeted by Sylar, impersonating Zane. Sylar babbles on incessantly on his epiphany about his gift, and his rather spacey behaviour should be sounding some alarm bells for Mohinder. Sylar demonstrates his newly-acquired gift, which is the ability to liquefy objects. I wonder what Sylar will use this power for – he is probably eager to melt his last remaining pillar of sanity.
Mohinder makes small talk with Sylar, telling him of his quest to contact those on the list. Sylar is eager to help him with this task, and says so with extreme intensity. If only Mohinder had majored in psychology.
Amid her increasing mistrust of her Mr Bennet, Claire contacts Meredith, hoping to gain some information about her real father. Meredith reveals that she has spoken to him and that he is going to fly down from New York. Claire is anxious to meet him, but Meredith is reluctant.
Claire goes once again to visit Meredith, desperate to see her father. Claire knows that he is powerful, and wants him to help her sick mother. Meredith lets Claire know that Nathan is sending money, but doesn't disclose the true amount. Not only is she prepared to extort the father of her child, she is also willing to rip off said daughter. Claire is understandably upset by the revelation that her real mother is really awful.
Nathan arrives at Meredith's trailer, and apologises for the mistakes of the past. He gives Meredith the money, then asks of Claire's whereabouts. Unbeknown to the pair, Claire is actually outside listening to the conversation. Meredith's power should be deceit, as she continues to lie about Claire's intentions. She offers to get Claire to return, but Nathan says it is not necessary. As she is driving away, Claire throws a rock at the car and cracks the rear window. Nathan is unable to see who threw the object, and as he turns around, it is clear that he is emotional. Since the taxpayers will likely pay for the damage to the car, one can only assume he is upset due to the meeting.
Ando returns to Hope and gives her the bag, and she tells Ando that he must come with her. When he asks after Hiro, she claims that he has already gone to meet Linderman. Ando is confused and upset, but immediately forgets this when Hope kisses him.
Hiro, however, is not meeting Linderman – he is trapped in a closet. Tom Cruise, John Travolta and R Kelly are nowhere to be seen. Hope's alleged boyfriend opens the door, and points a gun at Hiro. I suspect that Hiro is wishing for some hope of his own.
Matt comes to and climbs back in through the window, only to find that Aron has been ripped in half. I guess shooting him just wouldn't have the same impact. The police arrive, and a detective asks Matt if he knows where the diamonds are. Matt claims he doesn't know, but then he remembers that Aron was thinking about their location. He finds the diamonds, and goes to turn them in, but hears him thinking that Matt is a joke that will never wear a badge again. Disheartened, Matt pockets the diamonds. It may be a continuation of Matt's idiotic streak, but I suppose he deserve some reward for escaping Jessica unscathed.
Claire returns home to find a rather chaotic scene, with her mother yelling angrily at Mr Muggles. She says that she doesn't recognise the dog or Claire. Who would have thought that bleaching someone's brain would have such dire consequences?
Jessica is on the phone, telling the person on the other end that the task is completed. She opens her latest package, and it looks as if Nathan is her next assignment. Welcome to the world of public office, Nathan. I wonder if Jessica can shoot a flying target.
