Heroes: Distractions

June 29th 2007 00:27
Contrary to its name, Distractions continues to focus in on the continuing plotlines of Heroes.

Claude (Christopher Eccleston) begins to teach Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) how to control his power, and apparently he subscribes to the 'throw him in the deep end' method. Claude's theory is that Peter is unable to control his abilities because he is too distracted by the people in his life, who do nothing but take advantage of him. Peter argues that Simone (Tawny Cypress) is different, although considering that they've spent almost no time together since their hook-up, I'm not sure what he is basing that on. Claude suggests they follow her to see if she is as faithful as Peter believes.

Sylar (Zachary Quinto) is back to his old pre-dead self, his powers fully restored. He traps Mr Bennet (Jack Coleman) in the cell, taking his license and torturing him with his plans for Claire.
Mr Bennet - Heroes
Mr Bennet trapped by Sylar*

Sylar enters the Bennet home, playing with Mr Muggles until Mrs Bennet (Ashley Crow) comes home. I was worried that he was going to hurt the dog, but apparently he would only do so if Mr Muggles could spontaneously turn into a pit bull. Mrs Bennet isn't the brightest spark, and fails to notice Sylar's suspect story and appalling accent. She eventually realises something is amiss, when Sylar reveals his fixation with Claire. Realising the jig is up, Sylar attacks Mrs Bennet. In fortuitous timing, Mr Bennet and the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis) burst in, shooting at Sylar. He easily escapes, and I can't help but wonder why he desires Claire's ability, when it already seems like he is impervious to harm. Mrs Bennet is very confused and shaken up, but calms when the Haitian wipes her mind. I guess that is one way to cure post-traumatic stress disorder.

Niki (Ali Larter) has a session with Dr Witherson (Paula Newsome), and to no one's surprise, Jessica pays the good doctor a visit. When Niki comes to, she is horrified to find the doctor's badly tasered body.
Later on, Aron Malsky (Kevin Chamberlin), a henchman of Linderman, pays Niki a visit. He tells her that the charges against her have been dropped, and she is able to return home to reunite with DL (Leonard Roberts) and Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey). However, Jessica is none to happy about Niki's efforts to imprison her, and in return seals her up.

Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and Zach (Thomas Dekker) travel to see Claire's mother, Meredith (Jessalyn Gilsig), at the Kermit trailer park. Claire meets her mother, and they make awkward small talk. Eventually she decides to let her mother in on her secret – and what better way to do so than slicing her arm open. Not to be outdone, Meredith reveals her own power of pyrokinesis.

Hiro (Masi Oka) and Ando (James Kyson Lee) engage in a rather pointless subplot with Hiro's father (George Takei) and sister (Saemi Nakamura). Long story short, Hiro convinces his father that his sister should take over the family business, and he is able to continue on his quest.

Isaac (Santiago Cabrera) comes out of a trance to find that he has painted a taxi with light emanating from it. Simone comes to see him and notices that he has painted the two of them embracing on the roof of her father's building.
When they later rendezvous at the building, Isaac tells Simone that he believes the rooftop is connected to the events that are happening. He isn't sure that there is hope for the future, but she says that she believes in him. They share the embrace while, unbeknown to them, Claude and Peter are watching.

Peter is angry with Claude for undermining his faith in those he loves, but Claude responds that all he has to do is fly. He promptly throws Peter off the roof, which I thought was utterly hilarious. I doubt even Superman would be prepared to learn that way.
Peter doesn't fly, instead crashing into a taxi below. He does, however, regenerate. Peter realises that he needs to remember people, rather than forget them, in order to mimic their powers. Unfortunately, this realisation causes him to duplicate all the powers he has absorbed at once, and he starts to glow. Claude demonstrates that the best way to stop an exploding man is to knock him out.

Isaac once again paints the taxi, but this time Peter is partially visible. He calls Mr Bennet to inform him of this latest development, and Mr Bennet tells him that an old friend isn't as dead as they first thought. It seems that Claude has had a run in with Primatech Paper in the past.

Meredith contacts Claire's father to inform him that their daughter is still alive. It turns out that Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) is her daddy. Which of course means that Peter is her uncle, and that my comments in this recap quite inappropriate.

All the characters had their various distractions in this episode. However, rather than be ancillary to their journey, these diversions may be of the utmost importance. Sometimes it is what one learns during the distractions that has the most relevance in the future. On the path of destiny, everything has meaning.

Kylie, this episode was pretty good, but there are some stellar ones after this that I'm sure you will enjoy. I'm on holiday from uni at the moment - I just have to wait and see how I did in my exams...
