ABC Wages Programming War - Spicks and Specks, Extras and The Chaser

February 14th 2007 09:32
[I tried to post this earlier today before I went to work, but my computer ate it - and of course, it was the one time that I didn't have a copy saved.] Wednesday nights are fast becoming the best night for television programming. This is particularly true of the 8.30 - 9.30pm timeslot, in which a battle between Network Ten's House and Channel Seven's Heroes was already being waged. Now the ABC has joined the action.

Tonight sees the return of Spicks and Specks and Extras to our screens, at 8.30pm and 9.00pm respectively.

Both these shows rated extremely well for the ABC last year, so it will remain to be seen whether they can once again grab a large chunk away from the heavyweights.

Spicks and Specks is a music quiz show hosted by Adam Hills, and featuring actor Alan Brough and Triple J DJ Myf Warhurst as team captains. The rather unique games are very amusing, and feature music ranging from popular, to classical, to obscure. Tonight's guests include comedian Dave O'Neil and Evermore drummer Dann Hume.

Extras is a BBC comedy from the duo behind the hit series The Office, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Despite the central character, Andy Millman, often committing very stupid acts, he is a lot more likeable than David Brent. The send ups of big-name celebrities are just hilarious, but the show still manages to have a lot of heart. Tonight's episode, the first of the second season, features Orlando Bloom and Sophia Myles.

In other programming news, The Chaser's War On Everything is set to return Wednesday March 28 at 9pm, presumably when Extras finishes it's run. The show appears unscathed by the politics that brought about the demise of The Glass House, and has even managed a better timeslot than last year's late Friday night monstrosity. However, I have no doubt that they boys will make, at the very least, a passing reference to the controversial axing.

So Wednesday is set to be a stand-out night. My only problem is that I don't have a recording device at the moment, and I can't decide which one to watch. I need the powers that be to send me a sign. Perhaps a flying politician? Someone singing the words of a book to a popular tune? Orlando Bloom? Really, I'll take anything.

Nina,

Nice to see the little cube visiting.

I don't watch TV too much so am always on the lookout for something good.

Ahmed: I was a tad surprised (and relieved) that the Chaser didn't get axed along with the Glass House - but I suppose they make fun of people from all sides of the political spectrum, so no one can say they are biased.

Katyzzz: If you have an interest in music then you would probably enjoy Spicks and Specks, as it is a fun and lighthearted show. Extras is a very funny, but can occasionally lapse into vulgarity, which if I recall correctly is not something you like. On that same note, I suspect that The Chaser's War On Everything would probably be a tad crass for your taste. I hope I've been able to give you some idea of what would be a good show for you to tune into to

True that but the Chaser tends to target John Howard and co, simply because they can't take jokes in the same spirit as most other folks.

Actually, they don't really target conservatives that much do they? Just comes off across as such...

They really are pretty even in who they target - they do make fun of Howard a lot, but they were pretty merciless with Beazley as well. I always thought that most of the politicians took the jabs fairly good-naturedly, and none of them were outright hostile. Beazley was about the worst - he'd laugh it off, but usually his words would be vaguely threatening.
