TV Babble - June 2007

Heroes: Distractions

June 29th 2007 00:27
Contrary to its name, Distractions continues to focus in on the continuing plotlines of Heroes.

Claude (Christopher Eccleston) begins to teach Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) how to control his power, and apparently he subscribes to the 'throw him in the deep end' method. Claude's theory is that Peter is unable to control his abilities because he is too distracted by the people in his life, who do nothing but take advantage of him. Peter argues that Simone (Tawny Cypress) is different, although considering that they've spent almost no time together since their hook-up, I'm not sure what he is basing that on. Claude suggests they follow her to see if she is as faithful as Peter believes.

Sylar (Zachary Quinto) is back to his old pre-dead self, his powers fully restored. He traps Mr Bennet (Jack Coleman) in the cell, taking his license and torturing him with his plans for Claire.
Mr Bennet - Heroes
Mr Bennet trapped by Sylar*

Sylar enters the Bennet home, playing with Mr Muggles until Mrs Bennet (Ashley Crow) comes home. I was worried that he was going to hurt the dog, but apparently he would only do so if Mr Muggles could spontaneously turn into a pit bull. Mrs Bennet isn't the brightest spark, and fails to notice Sylar's suspect story and appalling accent. She eventually realises something is amiss, when Sylar reveals his fixation with Claire. Realising the jig is up, Sylar attacks Mrs Bennet. In fortuitous timing, Mr Bennet and the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis) burst in, shooting at Sylar. He easily escapes, and I can't help but wonder why he desires Claire's ability, when it already seems like he is impervious to harm. Mrs Bennet is very confused and shaken up, but calms when the Haitian wipes her mind. I guess that is one way to cure post-traumatic stress disorder.

Niki (Ali Larter) has a session with Dr Witherson (Paula Newsome), and to no one's surprise, Jessica pays the good doctor a visit. When Niki comes to, she is horrified to find the doctor's badly tasered body.
Later on, Aron Malsky (Kevin Chamberlin), a henchman of Linderman, pays Niki a visit. He tells her that the charges against her have been dropped, and she is able to return home to reunite with DL (Leonard Roberts) and Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey). However, Jessica is none to happy about Niki's efforts to imprison her, and in return seals her up.

Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and Zach (Thomas Dekker) travel to see Claire's mother, Meredith (Jessalyn Gilsig), at the Kermit trailer park. Claire meets her mother, and they make awkward small talk. Eventually she decides to let her mother in on her secret – and what better way to do so than slicing her arm open. Not to be outdone, Meredith reveals her own power of pyrokinesis.

Hiro (Masi Oka) and Ando (James Kyson Lee) engage in a rather pointless subplot with Hiro's father (George Takei) and sister (Saemi Nakamura). Long story short, Hiro convinces his father that his sister should take over the family business, and he is able to continue on his quest.

Isaac (Santiago Cabrera) comes out of a trance to find that he has painted a taxi with light emanating from it. Simone comes to see him and notices that he has painted the two of them embracing on the roof of her father's building.
When they later rendezvous at the building, Isaac tells Simone that he believes the rooftop is connected to the events that are happening. He isn't sure that there is hope for the future, but she says that she believes in him. They share the embrace while, unbeknown to them, Claude and Peter are watching.

Peter is angry with Claude for undermining his faith in those he loves, but Claude responds that all he has to do is fly. He promptly throws Peter off the roof, which I thought was utterly hilarious. I doubt even Superman would be prepared to learn that way.
Peter doesn't fly, instead crashing into a taxi below. He does, however, regenerate. Peter realises that he needs to remember people, rather than forget them, in order to mimic their powers. Unfortunately, this realisation causes him to duplicate all the powers he has absorbed at once, and he starts to glow. Claude demonstrates that the best way to stop an exploding man is to knock him out.

Isaac once again paints the taxi, but this time Peter is partially visible. He calls Mr Bennet to inform him of this latest development, and Mr Bennet tells him that an old friend isn't as dead as they first thought. It seems that Claude has had a run in with Primatech Paper in the past.

Meredith contacts Claire's father to inform him that their daughter is still alive. It turns out that Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) is her daddy. Which of course means that Peter is her uncle, and that my comments in this recap quite inappropriate.

All the characters had their various distractions in this episode. However, rather than be ancillary to their journey, these diversions may be of the utmost importance. Sometimes it is what one learns during the distractions that has the most relevance in the future. On the path of destiny, everything has meaning.

Doctor Who Returns Tonight

June 28th 2007 03:31
The latest season of Doctor Who returns tonight at 8.35pm tonight on the ABC, then continues 7.30pm Saturday nights.
Doctor Who
The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant)*
The first episode will be the Christmas special, The Runaway Bride, which takes up from the season finale of season 2/28.

I'm eager to see the direction the new season takes, after the departure of Rose. She was such a focus of the show, sometimes too much so. She gave the Doctor companionship, love and direction at a time when he needed it - he is the only one left, the lonely god, and now who will hold his hand? It's no secret that a new companion is going to join the Doctor - what sort of relationship will she forge with him, and will she be able to fill the void?

I'm curious also to see whether the focus of the series will shift to the Tenth Doctor, or whether the series will once again lie with his companion. It is interesting to see things from his sidekick's perspective - after all, humanity is all we have to define what is alien. However, I really want to see how the Doctor grieves for his loss. I don't want his suffering to be swept out of sight - I want to see him nurse his broken hearts, and to grow from knowing and losing Rose. And as much as I love how the Doctor's soul regenerates and lives on in another body, I certainly don't want his new companion to do the same.

Heroes: The Fix

June 26th 2007 07:47
The Fix continues the evolving plotlines of Heroes, with each of the characters attempting to deal with the situation they are now in.

The invisible man's name is revealed to be Claude Rains – this is a homage to the actor of the same name who played The Invisible Man in the 1933 film.
Claude Rains - Heroes
Claude comments on Peter's family connections*
The scenes between Claude (Christopher Eccleston) and Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) are fantastic, and Eccleston's portrayal of the character is hilarious and brilliant. Apparently he was originally offered the role of Sylar, but declined as he didn't want to be the stereotypical British villain.
Peter is convinced that Claude can teach him to control his power, although perhaps finding someone less hostile would be of more benefit. The only living things Claude appears to care about are himself and pigeons from Charles Duveax's building.

Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) and Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) are both desperate to find Peter. Mohinder explains that Peter is like a sponge – a very dangerous sponge that might absorb too much or something volatile. He also states that he may be the most important person on the list, which would definitely be a boost to Peter's fragile ego.
The pair confront Peter at his apartment, causing him to flee, apparently via flight. In actuality, Claude has grabbed him, thus turning him invisible. Claude agrees to help Peter and stop him from becoming the exploding man. This change of heart is probably due to the fact that, if everyone dies, who will he steal from?

Niki (Ali Larter) is straitjacketed and drugged, in a desperate bid to keep aggressive Jessica at bay. However, she later wakes up without either measure. A psychiatrist, Dr Witherson (Paula Newsome), is behind this, as she thinks Niki has multiple personality disorder. You could say that, if a dead sister with super strength that inhabits your body counts. I'm not really sure that therapy will be able to help with that little issue.

DL (Leonard Roberts) is having trouble making ends meet, and is facing an increasingly strained relationship with his son. Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey) says that Niki was always able to pay the bills – is he suggesting that DL make some of his own garage videos? Forget Niki; I think it is Micah who may need therapy.
In an effort to help his family get by, Micah uses his power on an ATM to withdraw a huge amount of money. I guess a tendency towards criminal behaviour run in the family too.

The Matt (Greg Grunberg) and Janice (Lisa Lackey) storyline has become even more boring, if that is even possible. What on Earth was with the broken pipe? I know that it is supposed to be a metaphor for fixing things between them, but I think there are more interesting things to watch than plumbing. The Mario Bros video games would have been far less successful if they entailed the actual fixing of pipes. Matt really needs something more engrossing to do, and the baby plotline is not it – after all, his wife has cheated on him, so it may not even be his.
Matt faces a review over his actions in previous episodes, and is given a six month suspension. This is an interesting development, when taking into consideration Peter's vision, as it shows Matt in his uniform. Assuming that it takes place a couple of weeks in the future, this equals a few possibilities – Matt may get reinstated; or the dream may not be strictly prophetic; or it is a symbolic representation of Matt in his superhero costume.

Hiro (Masi Oka) and Ando (James Kyson Lee) return to their rented Nissan Versa, only to find that someone is waiting for them. After some hide and seek, Hiro gets away, but Ando is caught. Hiro offers himself up in exchange, but the strange men take both of them. Finally, some bad guys that actually make a little sense!
The pair are driven away in a van, and we are supposed to think that they have been captured by Linderman. Once they arrive at their destination, they meet the man that organised their abduction – Hiro's father. This show is starting to rival Lost in terms of daddy issues. Hiro's father is played by George Takei, also known as Mr Sulu of Star Trek. This show has such great casting, particularly when taking into account Hiro's Star Trek fixation.

Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and Zach (Thomas Dekker) search the family computer for information. Zach mirrors my own thoughts when he says that Mr Bennet is too clever to leave pertinent and covert information unprotected. Claire decides to contact the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis), and to do so hangs wind chimes in her window. This method of contact is very zen, and is only to be expected from someone who can literally clear the mind of thought. He reveals to her that her mother died in a fire fourteen years ago.
Claire and Zach look up newspaper articles about the incident at the Burnt Toast Diner, which is a nice tie in as is where Charlie (Jayma Mays) worked. Claire manages to track down her mother, Meredith Gordon (Jessalyn Gilsig), who is very much alive. She also happens to be pyrokinetic, so at least she and Claire will have something to talk about.

Claire's pseudo-Dad, Hank (Colby French) is still examining Sylar (Zachary Quinto), eventually calling Mr Bennet (Jack Coleman) to inform him that Sylar is dead. It seems that this show may be turning into Alias, because Sylar too is not as dead as he once seemed.

The heroes are attempting to fix the situation that they have found themselves in – whether it be mending a broken relationship, trying to make ends meet, or learning to control what they are. However, there's no such thing as a quick fix, and actions can have unintended consequences. Like a drug hit, the fix is only temporary, and soon enough, the reality of the situation is going to hit hard.

In programming news,
Alias Cast
Season Five Cast*
Channel Seven are finally throwing Alias fans a bone (or perhaps a wig), with the final season set to return Sunday June 17th at 10.30pm. While most people have long since seen the remaining episodes of the show by other means, there are a small group of us that have not, and who have remained relatively spoiler free. I chose to keep the plotlines classified, thinking that I would enjoy them more when they were screened - of course, I had no idea how long I would have to wait...

I would also like to add my apologies for the complete lack of posts lately. I am in the midst of exams at the moment, so expect a drought of new content over the next couple of weeks, hopefully followed by a flurry thereafter
