TV Babble - March 2007

Veronica Mars: Happy Go Lucky

March 23rd 2007 09:38
The much-anticipated resolution to Veronica Mars Season Two draws ever-closer, with the finale airing tonight. The penultimate episode, Happy Go Lucky, began to bring together the myriad of intertwining plotlines, as well as revisiting the Lilly Kane murder from Season One.

The episode literally began with a bang – Lucky, having been fired for stalking the Goodman family, held Neptune’s students at gunpoint.
Veronica Mars - Happy Go Lucky
Lucky's got a gun*
This scene was absolutely enthralling, and James Jordan did a fantastic job at conveying the unhinged janitor. I was on the edge of my seat when he fired at Wallace (Percy Daggs III), and I really did think he was done for, considering Lucky’s first shot into the air had not been a blank. Lucky’s crazed spree did not last long, as he was taken down by the school security. This amazing and gripping scene led us into the opening credits, and included more action than many shows include in the whole episode.

The way Woody (Steve Guttenberg) was laying it on thick at the press conference was, quite frankly, sickening. He was also exceedingly creepy and menacing when he confronted Veronica (Kristin Bell) in his study. The character has always emitted a somewhat sinister vibe, and does even more so now that we know of his molesting ways.

There’s an interesting link between the two victims of the crash that appeared on the audio file – Peter was openly gay, and Marcos was sexually on the fence. Is the person edited out, who presumably sent it, gay as well? Peter, after all, mentioned previously the outing of all outings, and I have said before that I thought this may mean Woody. It would seem that the three were plotting this outing together.

The other issue is the ‘present’ left under Woody’s car – was this left by Lucky, or someone else? Since it is the same type of bomb that was on the bus, I would assume that another person was behind the making of it, at least.
Lucky’s revealed ramblings and actions indicate that he was an extremely disturbed young man. His wearing of a catcher’s mask and bleaching his feet was extremely odd – surely it must be related to Woody’s actions towards him, but how?
Woody, as Keith (Enrico Colantoni) predicted, has fled town – I wonder if it will be the last we see of him, or whether he will get his comeuppance in one way or another.

Terrence (Jeffrey Sams) may be off the hook for the bus crash, but not with Leonard Lobo (Gil Birmingham). Given his angered reaction to a situation that was entirely his doing, it’s no wonder that Jackie (Tessa Thompson) has some serious daddy issues. She has now left for France, and while I’m not particularly bothered by the departure of the character, I feel for poor Wallace.

Despite being a rather heavy episode, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. There were some very funny lines, particularly from Veronica. Mac (Tina Majorino) and Beaver/Cassidy (Kyle Gallner) were also very cute together when tutoring Weevil (Francis Capra). However, I can certainly understand Weevil’s irritation – it can be very exasperating to be the person caught in the middle of such flirting. I was so happy that he passed the test, and would be able to graduate. Unfortunately, Murphy’s Law had to make an appearance, in the form of the creepy kids from outside the church. This is not going to be good.

Finally we come to what we’ve been waiting for since last year’s finale – the murder trial of Aaron Echolls for the death of Lilly Kane. Aaron gave an Oscar winning performance in his testimony, and Harry Hamlin did an excellent job of conveying rather insincere sincerity. Poor Veronica was completely ripped into while on the stand, in a rather sexist display of how women’s sexual history is seen to correlate with their honesty and reliability. Sheriff Lamb (Michael Muhney) was quite reminiscent of the monster we met in the pilot episode of the series. He showed disgusting glee at learning of Veronica’s chlamydia, and was similarly insensitive to her report of rape in Season One.
Logan got off much easier in his testimony, because obviously being the organiser of bum fights and being accused of murder are not as discrediting as having a sexually transmitted disease. There was some nice work from Jason Dohring in this episode, particularly in his scene with Aaron.
I particularly loved how protective Keith was in relation to the questions about Veronica, even if it did damage his testimony.

Even after watching the trial, it was still shocking that Aaron was found not guilty – but of course, the jury was not privy to all that we have seen. As has been demonstrated before, the rich in Neptune have all the power, and this acquittal was always in the realm of possibility. It wouldn’t even surprise me if the jury was paid off – possibly even the judge as well, considering some of the unbelievable questions that were allowed.

More information has come to light about Ted Robinson's New Australian Comedy Programme. Back in January it was reported that the producer of Good News Week had a project in the works to replace The Glass House, and rumour was that the new show would be in the vein of The Big Gig. Now, the Age reports that it will actually be a remake of the iconic series.

This new show will be very much in line with the original, and include stand-up, sketches and musical performances. Hopefully, the terrible 80s fashions of the original will be absent. The studio audience will also be standing for the duration of the hour-long show - this is certain to result in a heightened level of energy and involvement, as well as some sore feet. The name of the programme has yet to be revealed.

A pilot episode was recently filmed, featuring comedians Eddie Perfect and Sam Bowring. Former DAAS member and GNW host Paul McDermott is reportedly involved as a writer for the series, and it wouldn't surprise me if other Robinson alumni are involved in this re-visitation of times past.

Heroes: Better Halves

March 22nd 2007 06:30
As you can probably tell, I am very, very behind on my Heroes recaps. I am going to do my best to get up to date, starting with the episode Better Halves. This was an enjoyable installment of the show; however, at times, it lapsed into predictability.

The episode began where the previous had left off – Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) delivering the message given by Future Hiro to Present-Day Hiro (Masi Oka). Of course, ‘Save the Cheerleader, Save the World’ makes even less sense to Hiro than it did to Peter. However, Hiro was very impressed by the fact that he will one day have a sword. Once again, I just have to reiterate how much I love Isaac’s (Santiago Cabrera) paintings, and the fact that they fit together like the panels in a comic book links in nicely with the execution of the show.

Claire (Hayden Panettiere) believes that she has met her biological parents, who, to her disappointment, turned out to be exceedingly ordinary. Considering that the reunion was organised by Mr Bennet (Jack Coleman), it was quite obvious that these people would be simply playing the role of Claire’s DNA donors.
I wonder if Claire’s real parentage will ever come to light. The fact that they were unable to be found, even when their daughter was stricken with a mysterious illness, indicates to me that they are either dead or detained.

DL Hawkins (Leonard Roberts), the husband of Niki (Ali Larter), has finally reappeared on the scene – and he phased through solid matter to do so. It is unsurprising that he has a Linderman connection, and I imagine all the Heroes will be linked to the mysterious mobster in some way.
Heroes - Better Halves
DL chokes Niki from the inside*
Niki has finally caught up with audience and realized that her alter ego was behind the deaths of DL’s crew. The conversation between the two halves revealed that Niki’s reflective self is extremely paranoid and mistrustful. On a completely superficial note, she also has better hair. The physical fight between Niki’s alternate persona and DL was quite intense; she threw him clear across the room, he literally reached into her chest. I felt so sorry for poor Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey) when he walked in – it’s bad enough to see your parents fight, without throwing super powers into the mix.

Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) has left for India, his doubts finally getting the better of him. Eden (Nora Zehetner) attempted to use her feminine wiles to convince him to stay. This was at the instruction of Mr Bennet, and I’d just like to say that I totally called her on being shady. What does she have in store for Isaac?

Although the title Better Halves relates mostly to Niki's split personality, this theme runs deeper throughout the episode. A wife and husband are supposed to be each other's better halves, but neither Niki or DL can take the moral high ground. Hiro and Ando (James Kyson Lee) show that a hero needs a sidekick to be complete, and vice versa. Finally, Claire meeting illustrates that we are the two halves of our parents - and that something is amiss if we don't fit.

Veronica Mars: Look Who's Stalking

March 15th 2007 05:51
Look Who’s Stalking, the latest episode of Veronica Mars, was filled with many entertaining moments and important revelations. Season two may be drawing ever-closer to its climax, but the solutions to the year’s mysterious remain elusive.

In quite an unexpected turn of events, Veronica (Kristin Bell) has chlamydia. STDs are rarely dealt with on television, particularly teen shows – The OC’s Ryan and Marissa would have been prime candidates, with their numerous exploits – so kudos to the writers for tackling the issue

Heroes: Hiros

March 12th 2007 10:36
Hiros was quite an enthralling episode of Heroes. It built on the collisions from the previous episode and further developed the characters.

Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) is correct in stating that the default scientific position should be skepticism, but his ambivalence towards the research is fast becoming irritating. Evolution is an imperfect process - he shouldn't have been surprised that Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) was unsure and had yet to master his power. Mohinder has come half way around the world to continue the research that led to his father's murder - to dismiss Peter as a charlatan so quickly seemed counter-productive

I'm going to attempt to catch up with the reviews I missed, starting with the Veronica Mars episode Nevermind the Buttocks. It contained a lot of intriguing developments that are likely to be pertinent to the ongoing mysteries of the season.

It appears that Kendall Casablancas (Charisma Carpenter) is not who she seems, and is in fact more calculating than I had given her credit for. She is using the name of a classmate that she killed, possibly on purpose.
Veronica Mars: Nevermind the Buttocks
Veronica discovers the green Barracuda*
She has committed and served time for fraud, and now the Fitzpatricks are somewhat indebted to her. In addition to all of this, in the event of the simultaneous deaths of Dick (Ryan Hansen) and Beaver (Kyle Gallner), she stands to gain a whopping 8-figure payout. That certainly takes the archetype of the evil stepmother to a whole new level. I doubt that Beaver/Cassidy had any inkling of Kendall's ways when he enlisted her help in his business, and it seems that he is playing a very dangerous game

My Apologies

March 5th 2007 22:03
My apologies for the lack of blog posts recently. I have been completely snowed under with work and university - so much so that I even missed every episode of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report last week, which in itself should tell you that I was severely time-deprived. I'm hoping that I will have a few hours spare over the coming days to, at the very least, catch up on the reviews of Veronica Mars and Heroes that I am behind on. So keep an eye out - hopefully some content should be up soon, and I thank you for your patience!
