Heroes: Collision

February 23rd 2007 08:53
Collision was another intriguing episode of Heroes. It advanced the struggles of the characters well, but is still suffering from minor problems.

Officer Matt may not have had a huge amount of screen time this week, but his solitary scene managed to be incredibly creepy. Why is it that Greg Grunberg’s characters are always treated appallingly? Visually, this segment was fantastic, with the blue lighting adding a clinical and ominous feel to an already menacing scene.
Matt’s collapse was the result of being drugged by Mr Bennet (Jack Coleman), who is now keeping him prisoner, presumably for some nefarious reason. The mysterious man from the bar (Jimmy Jean-Louis) appeared once again, and it was confirmed that he is able to block Matt’s mind reading ability, although he was able to snatch ‘Claire’ from Mr Bennet’s mind. It sounds as if the mysterious man will rob Matt of either his powers or his memories. Neither is a particularly fun alternative.

Hiro
(Masi Oka) and Ando (James Kyson Lee) were entertaining as always, although it appears that Ando is quite a bad influence. Hiro certainly isn't a natural cheat – it’s one thing to move a roulette ball; it's another to switch the cards that someone has already seen. For the sharp eyed, the pair gambled at the Montecito Hotel and Casino, which is the setting of another NBC show, Las Vegas.

We actually got to see the process via which Isaac (Santiago Cabrera) paints his visions of the future. It appears that the drugs allow him to enter a trance-like state, which does lend credence to theory of the brain being significant in heroes' powers. I enjoyed the transition between his live-action vision and his artistic rendering - it was a very cool effect, and it shows that Claire will be a main target of some hostile force.

Speaking of Claire, I was quite annoyed that her awakening had changed from the last episode - rather than switch back to the medical examiner to maintain the integrity of the scene, they changed the dialogue completely. It felt like a total disconnect from the previous cliff-hanger, and took me utterly out of the moment. It is also a little difficult to believe that her body was discovered and an autopsy conducted in such a short space of time, but I'm willing to overlook that as a necessary device for the plot.
Heroes - Collision
Claire's literal collision*

Despite the issues with Claire's storyline, there was some great work from Hayden Panettiere, particularly when she broke down at the weight of all that has happened. Until now I had neglected to mention her geeky friend Zach (Thomas Dekker) - he is very much the voice of reason in Claire's life, and is even somewhat of a sidekick for her.
Seeing Claire would have been quite a spooky experience for Brody (Matt Lanter), so he must be quite the sociopath to continue his awful behaviour. Knowing that he is a serial rapist, it is certainly understandable that Claire wanted to exact revenge, but there will ultimately be ramifications for her actions.

Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) is a very intelligent man, so he really should have known that yelling warnings to Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) would not have been the best course of action to take. I still feel sorry for Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) - he is desperate to understand his heroic self, but the elusiveness of his power makes it difficult for him to convince anyone of its existence. It seems that Peter shares my theory on the empathetic nature of his gift - the real question, however, is whether he is able to retain these borrowed abilities. If so, then he could potentially become the most powerful being on the planet.
I'm also curious as to whether Peter was the one that froze the train, or if it was Future Hiro's doing. Future Hiro is very different from his present day equivalent - his garb, weapons and unaccented English indicate that the time he is from is a long way off.

Through the enigmatic Linderman, Nathan and Niki were brought together. It’s hard to believe that this could be coincidental. Nathan is obviously dwelling on his new found capability, despite trying to convince Peter otherwise. It appears that Niki's alter ego takes over during stressful or dangerous situations, and the changeover is instantaneous. It seems that she does the things that Niki doesn't want to do, almost like the ultimate compartmentalisation. The initial switch was very subtle, but definitely noticeable, and Ali Larter did a great job conveying it. The only noticeable physical difference between the pair is that the alter ego has a tattoo of the mysterious symbol. I love that she referred to Micah (Noah Gray-Cabey) as 'our son,' as it demonstrates an involvement in Niki's life, rather than complete detachment. Concerning Micah, it is apparent that he knows what Niki was doing as an occupation - either he has been spying on her, or he is in some way gifted as well.

The title Collision is an apt one, and not just for the obvious car crash. In physics, a collision is nothing more than bodies coming together, and that is exactly what the heroes are doing. The characters are colliding; drawn together by the forces of fate. What will be the result of the impact?

Television's Hottest Couples

February 21st 2007 12:30
Television's romantic pairings are funny things. Many couples just aren't believable. Others really are quite cute together. Then there are those duos that fall into another category entirely, with chemistry so intense that they could fulfil the Earth's energy needs for the next thousand years. Today's post delves into the superficial - the hottest couples on TV.

The factors that determine what make a sizzling partnership cannot be defined, and it is often the most unlikely characters that have the most sparks. Perhaps there is an element of the forbidden that makes the relationship all the more intense. Writers may have their own ideas about who is meant to be, but often the attraction (or lack thereof) between two actors will railroad these plans. Below are the couples that light my screen on fire.

Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) and Michael Vaughn (Michael Vartan) - Alias
Sydney and Vaughn - Alias
Sparks fly with Sydney and Vaughn*

From the outset, it was obvious that this double agent and her handler were attracted to each other. Their secretive meetings were always filled with unexpressed longing and desire - two people unable to speak in public, let alone get involved. Then, with the fall of SD-6 in Phase One, everything changed. Who didn't cheer when these two finally locked in a passionate embrace, amidst the sparking wreckage of what had held them apart?

Veronica Mars (Kristin Bell) and Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) - Veronica Mars
Veronica and Logan - Veronica Mars
Veronica and Logan's unexpected kiss**

Despite the fact that they are still in high school, Veronica and Logan's often volatile relationship is practically electric. After Lily's death the former friends became estranged, but in their snark and sniping there was an underlying sense of attraction. Through the events of the series, they started to understand each other and connect. Weapons of Class Destruction saw the pair finally act on their feelings, and LoVe truly blossomed.

Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Spike (James Masters) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Spike and Buffy - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Spike and Buffy's dangerous lust***

The relationship between Buffy and Spike was the epitome of forbidden love - that between the slayer and a vampire. The territory was not new for the show; Angel was Buffy's first love interest, but the difference lay in the presence of his soul. That may have been a redeeming feature in Buffy’s eyes, but it was one of boredom in mine. Spike and Buffy may not have been a story of true love, but it certainly was one of ultimate attraction. This pair tops the list purely for their encounter in Smashed - a love scene so passionate that they literally brought down the house.

What other couples would qualify for the list? What is it about a television couple that makes them truly ‘hot'?

Veronica Mars: I Am God

February 20th 2007 04:54
I Am God was an engaging episode of Veronica Mars, although it would have benefited from an earlier placing in the season. After the stunning conclusion to Felix's death in Plan B, it felt as if these sudden developments in the season's other mystery were quite rushed.

For me, the highlight of this episode was the dream sequences, taking place underwater in the crashed bus. The filter used captured the surreal quality perfectly, and the symbolic presentation of the characters gave an insight into how Veronica's subconscious mind views the victims.
Veronica Mars - I Am God
Veronica dreams of the bus crash victims*

Up to this point, Veronica (Kristin Bell) hadn't been taking an active role in investigating the crash. Many seem to think that this is out of character for her, but I consider it perfectly understandable. As Veronica herself said at the beginning of the season, she wants normalcy. Her investigation into Lily's murder almost got her killed, and all Veronica's actions this season have been concerned with returning to a somewhat ordinary life. Add to that her conclusion that she may have been the target of the crash - she doesn't want to investigate further for fear of finding confirmation of her guilt.
On the whole, I think these dreams were well executed, and a presented all this new information by showing how Veronica is processing it. The I Am God misdirection involving Marcos (Jeremy Ray Valdez) was also carried out well.

This episode certainly elucidated what we already suspected about some plotlines, while also adding a load of new questions and information. Veronica has finally been reading Meg's (Alona Tal) emails, and one has to wonder what role, if any, Lucky (James Jordan ) will play in this mystery. It was confirmed that Cervando (Maximino Arciniega Jr.) had aggravated the Fitzpatricks by beating Liam (Rodney Rowland) out of money and then bragging about it. He was also very annoyed with Dick (Ryan Hansen) for ruining his expensive jeans, but chose to take it out on Beaver (Kyle Gallner) instead - something that, I would infer, happens a lot. Also concerning the Casablancas boys, it has come to light that Dick Senior would have benefited greatly from their deaths
Rhonda's (Audra J. Morgan) family has received a payout from Woody Goodman (Steve Guttenberg), allegedly due to an unrelated incident at one of his restaurants. Perhaps he was involved in the crash, and it is hush money for their silence? I find it hard to imagine that even the poorest family would take money in exchange for silence when concerning the death of their child, but Neptune parenting skills leave a lot to be desired.

Betina (Blythe Auffarth) was also angry at Dick, and was attempting to fall pregnant by him. He gave her a present which included a baseball, which he retrieved from the trash after Peter (Luke Fryden) threw it away. It has already been revealed that Terrence Cook (Jeffrey Sams) came under suspicion for the crash because remnants of a baseball and cell phone were found in the driver's body. From that, I think we can assume that this baseball contained the explosives, which were remotely detonated via a phone call.
Veronica mentioned that Peter won the baseball in a raffle, so who was the organiser of the prize? Since the ball was in the possession of three different people, was one of them specifically the target? Cervando also explained that whoever set off the explosion had to be in sight of the bus, so that suggests that someone in the limo could have been responsible, as it was following closely behind.

Returning to Peter, he threw his prize away, which indicates that he doesn't care for baseball. So, as he said to Veronica, why was he on the trip in the first place? Peter had mentioned on the gay messageboard that he was going to conduct the 'outing of all outings.' It is easy to assume that this referred to Mr Wu (Martin Yu), but what if Peter had bigger fish to fry? Woody Goodman was the host of the field trip, and his grabbing of Logan's arm suggested an attraction to young men. What if Woody Goodman was the person that Peter was going to out?

Despite all the doom and gloom of the crash, the episode was not without its fair share of humour. The subplot involving Keith (Enrico Colantoni) was entertaining, and it was great when he came across Veronica in the closet. I'd been hoping for a scene between Logan (Jason Dohring) and Wallace (Percy Daggs III), and I certainly wasn't disappointed in the interaction between them. I particularly liked Veronica's confusion when Wallace stuck up for Logan. It was also nice to see that both of them attempting to help Veronica retain the Kane scholarship. Veronica may have been accepted into Stanford, but I continue to think that she will end up attending Hearst.
I was also pleased to see the return of flashbacks, particularly the rather steamy scene between Logan and Veronica. Comparing the hotness of their pairing to that of Duncan and Veronica is like comparing the sun and a glacier.
Logan and Dick were very funny together as always, especially with the Brokeback Mountain reference. Ryan Hansen really deserves credit for this role; Dick's dickish ways often overshadow the stellar job that he is doing. I also loved the meta referral to Paris Hilton giving Veronica nightmares - after all, I still blame her for the show's ratings woes.

On the surface it seems that this episode is pummelling us with new information; on closer examination, there are a bevy of references to previous happenings, and it ties in well with ongoing storylines. My biggest disappointment is that we didn't see Veronica search the bus - I imagine it would have been a harrowing and cathartic experience, knowing that, if not for some very fortuitous events, she would have shared the fate of those that haunt her dreams.

Heroes: One Giant Leap

February 15th 2007 09:33
One Giant Leap was an enjoyable episode of Heroes, although it fell back slightly from the standard set by Don't Look Back. The plotlines of some characters were extremely entralling, while others seemed to develop little from last week.

It was great to see Officer Matt Parkman's (Greg Grunberg) professional life steam ahead, even if his personal one is going down the drain. It's quite ironic that a man who can read minds is so ineffectual at communicating. I hope that he and Agent Hanson (Clea Duvall) continue to work together, as they seem to have the potential for a really strong partnership

[I tried to post this earlier today before I went to work, but my computer ate it - and of course, it was the one time that I didn't have a copy saved.] Wednesday nights are fast becoming the best night for television programming. This is particularly true of the 8.30 - 9.30pm timeslot, in which a battle between Network Ten's House and Channel Seven's Heroes was already being waged. Now the ABC has joined the action.

Tonight sees the return of Spicks and Specks and Extras to our screens, at 8.30pm and 9.00pm respectively.

Both these shows rated extremely well for the ABC last year, so it will remain to be seen whether they can once again grab a large chunk away from the heavyweights

Veronica Mars: Plan B

February 13th 2007 08:56
Plan B was an excellent episode of Veronica Mars. Although it contained a lot of amusing moments, it was probably the most disquieting episode of the season to date.

The culmination of the stabbing plotline was quite unsettling, and I am certain that the ramifications of this episode will be evident in those that follow.

Weevil confesses his sins*
Molly (Annie Campbell) obviously was lying about the Fitzpatricks killing both her and Felix (Brad Bufanda) if they knew about their relationship. What I didn't foresee was that Thumper (James Molina) was the one to tell them, probably as a way to ingratiate himself with the clan

Heroes: Don't Look Back

February 9th 2007 07:21
Don't Look Back, the second episode of Heroes, was slightly stronger than the pilot, Genesis. It did have a somewhat darker feel than last week, and this added an extra edge to an already enjoyable concept.

First off, I have to say that I really like the opening voice over done by Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) - his voice is very distinctive, and gives the show a rather epic feel. It was very strange that the man in his apartment spared his life - they were quite prepared to kill his father, so why not him? Although the neighbour, Eden (Nora Zehetner), seems innocuous, there is something about her that I don't trust. Perhaps I just don't buy the supposed friendship between her and the elder Suresh - after all, wouldn't making her privy to his theories put her own life in danger? I probably have it wrong, but I think she is one to watch

Veronica Mars: The Rapes of Graff

February 7th 2007 01:15
The Rapes of Graff was another intriguing episode of Veronica Mars. It revisited previous characters and plotlines, while setting up storylines for the future.

The Mystery of the Week was well executed, and included both hilarity and poignancy.
Veronica Mars - The Rapes of Graff
Veronica and Troy meet again*
The victim, Stacy, was portrayed by Alia Shawkat of Arrested Development fame, and she aptly captured the struggle between anger and sorrow as a result of the rape. Her AD co-star Michael Cera also made an appearance as the good-natured but slightly clueless Dean. I liked that Veronica (Kristin Bell) projected some of her own experience on the case; it gave her involvement an extra depth beyond just helping a duplicitous ex-boyfriend. Aaron Ashmore did a good job as Troy, but even with his return to the straight and narrow I'm still not particularly fond of the character. I won't admit how long it took me to actually get the title of the episode - I knew it was a spoonerism of the Grapes of Wrath, but I couldn't work out where the 'Graff' came in - until I remembered that Troy's last name is Vandergraff. My favourite part of the episode was Veronica's overwrought spiel to the wig shop employee, and the ridiculously sappy music that accompanied it

Heroes: Genesis

February 2nd 2007 03:38
Genesis, the first episode of the new show Heroes, was solid and included some really great moments. It was a little slow in places due to the large amount of exposition, but this is often a necessary evil in a pilot episode.

At first I was a little put off by the scrolling text as it was very reminiscent of Star Wars, but in the end I decided that it was an effective way to give information that would have been clunky as dialogue. I did like how the episode title was superimposed on the roof, and the whole opening sequence had a very cinematic feel. The visual of a falling man and the concurrent narration was quite effective, and was a memorable opening to the first episode
